My Love for the Pigeons- Larry Mitchell

This is a little background on how I got into homing pigeons when I was 16. I was raised in Encinitas, California. My older brother brought several pigeons that were not homers. After a few weeks, he had lost interest in them and gave them to me. After a few months, I was learning about racing pigeons; it sounded like a challenge to me, and a fun thing to do. I was riding my bicycle past a guy’s house, and I stopped and asked him if I could look at his pigeons. His name was Bob Brummel. That was the beginning of my love for pigeons. He helped me get into racing pigeons. Bob and several of the guys from the club gave me pigeons to fly. I flew my first young bird race in the fall of 1968. Bob helped me train my birds because I didn’t have a car or a driver’s license yet. I did poorly on the first and second races.  At the clubhouse after the second race, I asked another pigeon flyer, Gordon Bradley, if he could see what was wrong with my birds. He came over to my house and looked them over, and asked if I had any worming medicine. I told him that I did, and he told me to get the medicine and use the eye dropper to give the medicine to each of the birds. The next day, I could see worms in their droppings, so the medicine did the trick. In the third race, I got first place among all of the clubs. Winning that race, I knew that I had the capability to win races. I flew the rest of that season. In late 1969, I was drafted into the military for two years.

When I returned home from Vietnam, my parents had moved back to Oakley, Utah. My passion returned for the birds and in 1974 I finally had a house where I could have birds again. I called my friends in California and they sent me up a team of young birds that I could train and fly. I started winning some races again which got me really excited. We flew a 600-mile race to Newhall, California back to Utah, and I won the race 20 min ahead of everyone else. I will never forget that feeling of winning that race. 

Over many years of flying and learning about pigeons, I learned about eye sign from a guy in California named Bill Soderberg. I have based my breeding over the years on genetics, physic, and eye sign to breed all of my best birds. I have done very well with my pigeons in the years that I have been flying.

I inbreed the best ones, and then cross breed then into another family for flyers. A three-way cross is ideal. I hope that you appreciate the time and effort that has gone into these youngsters that I have sent into the auction to help with this fundraiser for the flood victims. I am grateful for all of the people that have helped me out over the years.

The birds that I sent for the auction are really inbred but handle like an outcross. If you buy these birds, I know that you will really be pleased with them. Study the pedigrees and see how many times that the Kassboer is in the pedigree. Study New Kim’s pedigree that sold for $1.9 million in Gaston Van De Wouwer final sale, and you will be able to see that I have birds that relate back to him.
