UPDATE: Nov. 8, A full sibling to 1859 bred 20th place, 2nd drop, 3 minutes to win in the final 351 mile Apple Cup race with over 900 birds originally entered.
This hen carries a very unusual package of genes. But first let's get the real question out of the way: Can they race? The answer is yes. Don’t let the color fool you otherwise. A first cousin to this auction bird (bred from a recessive opal) just finished 2nd place 250 miles and 4th place 200 miles at the Breeders Fall Classic. Siblings to this bird at auction include a money winner in 2016 Dixie Convention Race: 45th vs. 271b 340m. The same cock as an old bird was 10th place Combine vs. 612b (2nd place club) @ 500 miles on the day, 34th Combine vs 669b @ 250m, 62nd Combine vs 672b @ 400m. Another sibling was 5th place 250m vs 285b. in Omaha in 2017. The list of wins by cousins, neices and nephews is long. This hen includes the lines of Golden Gaby, Eisenhower, Joint Venture and Black National.
These recessive opals (also known as mosaics to the Brits) pop up in the M&D Evans line of birds carrying the Shadow and Golden Gaby lines. They are tough to come by. One just sold at an AJ Redstar auction for $1200 last year.
You may not care about the racing performance genes LDHA and DRD4. If you don't, then this bird may not interest you as much. Added to the genetic mix in this bird is the LDHA gene (AB). Let's add a little DRD4 to the recipe, too (CCCT). If you want to add any of these genes to your loft, with an interesting color, from a winning line, this is your bird. Try finding an LDHA AB DRD4 CCCT bird when you want one.
**Please Note: The shape of these birds have not been digitally altered or contoured in any way. I do not digitally sculpt my birds. You can trust that this is what they look like.
Just what are the LDHA and DRD4 genes and why should you care? It's found in only a very small percentage of our birds and scientific studies have shown that it is present in top performers. The birds listed above carry this gene and can introduce it into your loft. Dave Shewmaker has written a great explanation about it. Marc De Cock's 2018 1st National Ace bird was just tested for AB CCCT.
